Procesión de El Cautivo (The Captive)

We were woken from our slumbers at 2 am this morning by the applause of the crowd and the sound of the band, heralding the return of the procession that had left the Iglesia del Socorro six hours earlier.
On each side of the street were the hooded "Nazarenos" (candle bearers), preceeding the first of the paso's (platforms).

The first paso, supported by forty men, showed the captive Jesus.

The second paso of the Virgin Mary, again carried by forty men, followed a short distance behind.

During the course of the procession a bell is sounded approximately every twenty metres or so to enable the platform bearers to have a rest.

The dedication, pride and effort that these mainly young guys display in carrying the paso's for over six hours, up and down the hills of Olvera, is nothing short of incredible and a real credit to both themselves and the town.

Not least to mention the magnificent Town Band of Olvera, who attend nearly every procession with the same enthusiasm and dedication.
