Batalla de las Bandas (Battle of the bands)

Today's event in the Carnaval calendar was a competition between the various bands, described as Chirigota's (groups that sing humorous and satirical songs), from Olvera and surrounding towns.

In lovely weather, we went to the Plaza de Andalucia, bought a couple of beers and settled down to enjoy the atmosphere of the event.

The first group on stage were " Los Bandoleros de la Sierra de Cala" (the bandits of the Sierra de Cala) from the nearby town of Villamartin.

Everyone was encouraged to dress for the occasion and the staff at Bar Mi Pueblo got into the spirit by dressing as "flower children", evoking the spirit of the sixties (for those like us who own up to remembering !!).

Equally so did Olivia, dressed beautifully in traditional costume,........

......daughter of our friends Mark and Maria.

The band " Que Corra el Aire" from San Fernando, near Cadiz.
This lovely couple were happy to pose......

....and then insisted that I ruin the picture.

The third group to appear were "Más valle pájaro en mano que una patá en la cara" from Cadiz. Very loose translation is "A bird in the hand is worth more than a foot in the face".

Views over the Plaza de Andalucia.

From Campillos, a nearby town, came the group "No te arrimes que te canto".

Our friends Colin and Celia, lovely people, visiting their house in Olvera for a few days.

From Olvera came "Este año se nos ve el Plumero".

Also from Olvera, "Los Petardos de la Feria" (the fireworks of the Feria).

"Este año se nos ve el plumero" (This year we see the feather duster) were waiting their turn as we left the proceedings at about 5pm.

A brilliant day's entertainment and a great community effort by all in Olvera. My apologies for the lack of or poor translation of the Chirogota's names. I am open to any corrections or translations that can be provided.

We look forward to more events in the week to come.
