Two of the Carnaval Chirigota groups from Olvera were invited to perform at the Centro de dia de Mayores de Olvera (Day Centre for the Elderly), a popular haunt of ours as you might know by now, so we walked up at about 12.15pm and sat down for the show.
Chirigota is the generic name of singing groups who perform humerous and satirical songs during Carnaval, often making fun of local and national government, politics and individuals.
Advertised for a midday start, at about 1.15pm the first group called " Los petardos de la Feria" (the fireworks of the fair) took to the stage.
They were brilliant and performed to a packed audience for about an hour. Regrettably, our spanish is still not good enough to understand every word but even so you cannot fail to appreciate the humour, passion and harmonies of the groups.
Next up were "Este año se nos ve el plumero" (this year we see the feather duster)....don't blame me for the translation!.
They were equally good, putting on a show for another hour or so.
Well done to all. Much appreciated by all who attended.
