Torre Tavira

Today we took our visitor's Nick and Kate to Cadiz to allow them to have some time on the beach and a dip in the Atlantic.
The ulterior motive was to visit the Tavira Tower, a 30.5 metre buiding, giving panoramic views over Cadiz from the roof.
We found the location on Calle Sacremento, paid our 4 euros and climbed to the roof. And what a view!!

In 1778 the Tavira Tower was appointed as the official watchtower for Cadiz, it being at that time the tallest lookout point in the area.

The link at the end of this post gives a lot more detail.

Looking southeast toward the Cathedral.

A closer view of the towers of the Iglesia de San Antonio.

Looking northwest, with the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri in the middle ground.

West towards the Castillo de San Sebastian.

A closer look at the Castillo de San Sebastian with the ancient hospital of Mora in the foreground.

Looking east towards the port area.

One of the two exhibition rooms within the tower.

In addition, the entrance fee included a view of Cadiz using the "Camera Obscura".

This comprised a convex dish upon which was projected a moving image of the town. A hole in the ceiling of the room allowed sunlight to fall upon a mirror, which was then magnified by a lens onto the dish. Absolutely fantastically clear images.

If you ever get the chance to go to Cadiz, make a visit to the Torre Tavira a priority.
