Villamartin re-visited

We had volunteered to take a friend to Villamartin on business, so we took the opportunity of another look around after our last visit in mid September. Villamartin is a town approximately 25 minutes drive west of Olvera, just off the main A-384 road.

We had noticed this flight of steps on our first visit but didn't have the inclination or energy to climb them then. But, on this occasion we did.

They led to a new housing estate with great views over the town and beyond.

Coming down to earth we arrived at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

Looking across to the Ayuntamiento with the Church of Santa Maria de las Virtudes behind.

The Casino Cultural on the square. Founded in 1949, apart from no doubt hosting cultural activities it also appeared to be a meeting place for the senior citizens of Villamartin.
Next to the Casino was the tourist office where we picked up some useful maps and literature about the town.

Calle Botica ,off the square, which appeared to be one of the main shopping streets.

We were unsure what this building was but something was going on inside so we poked our head in.
The patio area was beautiful and an exhibition of ceramics was being prepared. We were however politely informed that it was not open to the public until tomorrow evening so we made a dignified exit.

I hope I'm forgiven by our spanish friends but I would best describe Villamartin as a "working" town, with some attractive buildings, squares and parks, rather than as an out and out tourist centre.
Worth a visit though if only to sit in the pleasant Town Hall square and people watch with a cup of coffee or a cervesa.
