Cadiz....again !

We love the city of Cadiz and since our last visit in May it had always been our intention to return and explore some more.
So this morning we set off early with the express intention of visiting the Castillo de Santa Catalina and one of the museums.

We parked the car in an underground car park in the Paseo de Canalejas, by the docks, emerging into a lovely warm day with a pleasant breeze and started our stroll around the old town.
This is a picture of the "Gran Teatro Falla", dating to 1909, when it was built on the site of an old wooden theatre.

After about 30 minutes we arrived at the entrance to the Castillo de Santa Catalina, dating to the 16th century.

Inside the walls there were quite a few buildings now given over to exhibitions or concerts.

Looking over the battlements towards the Castillo de San Sebastián.

Looking back towards the castle before moving around the bay of La Caleta to the Castillo de San Sebastián.

The Playa de la Caleta.

The La Caleta gate, through which you pass to visit the Castillo de San Sebastián. The castle stands on a small island and owes it's name to the chapel erected in 1457 by Venetian sailors confined to the island due to plague.

Looking toward the castle from the causeway.

Looking back towards Cadiz.

In 1613, a lookout tower was built, also serving as a lighthouse and the castle and surrounding fortifications were added in 1706.
Unfortunately, we were unable to gain access as the entrance was gated and locked so we headed back along the causeway.

Cadiz has an abundance of beautiful parks and squares. This is the lovely Alameda Apodaca that provided some welcome shade on the walk back.

The Plaza de España and the monument commemorating the Spanish Constitution of 1812.

Well, you'll no doubt notice that we didn't actually get to the museum. We found it but it was closed but not to worry, a perfect excuse for another trip in the future to this beautiful city.
