Fuengirola

Fuengirola....a popular resort for many British holidaymakers and our destination today.
The motive for our trip was a visit to "Iceland", a franchise selling familiar British food items, (sorry Olvera, we are not deserting you honest but the pull of Bowyers sausages was irresistable) and also to a clothes store called Dunnes close by. It would also be opportunity to take a stroll along the promenade and seafront.

We left Olvera at about 9am and by 10.30 were parking up at the shopping centre. After a couple of hours of retail therapy, with coffee in between, we drove the short distance to the interesting part of the trip, the seafront.

The Mediterranean was very calm and it was pleasant to walk along the western end of the promenade in temperatures of about 28°C. There weren't many people on the beach but I guess that at the 1st October the main holiday season was over.

We came to the Puente de la Armada Española, a suspension bridge dedicated to the men and women who were part of the Spanish Armada.

The bridge spans a river estuary and forms part of the promenade along the front, passing the old Moorish castle of Fuengirola.

The view from the castle looking east.

The view west.

The busy A-7 motorway, the Autovia del Mediterráneo, runs through Fuengirola and onwards along the length of the Costa del Sol.

Looking east across the bay to Benalmádena-Costa.

The little that we saw of the seafront and the park areas just behind were really clean and tidy and very pleasant to walk around. I must admit that I did have pre-conceived images in my mind of British themed bars and restaurants lining the seafront but I was pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was.

Here we are with our friend Gerry enjoying a (non alchoholic) beer and orange juice at one of the bars.

After just over an hour or so, we headed back to the car for the journey home, to definately return another day and explore more of the delights that no doubt Fuengirola has to offer.
