El Puerto de Santa Maria

We hadn't been out for a while so today we decided to take a trip to the beach at El Puerto de Santa Maria, a town approximately 10kms north of Cadiz as the crow flies but probably more like 25-30kms by road.

It had been recommended by Mike and Elaine as a place to see so we set off at 8.30 arriving at about 10am, not too far to drive. We parked the car on the street about 700 metres from the seafront and our first impressions were of a tidy, clean resort with a good selection of restaurants and bars. The promenade was beautiful and the beach, which was very clean, appeared to stretch all the way to Cadiz ........we're not quite up to that kind of walking distance yet but we are working on it.

After a couple of hours we fancied something to eat, in particular paella, which was advertised in several of the restaurants. We sat down at a table in a restaurant, asked about the paella, to be told that they were only serving breakfast......this was 11.45. So after an orange juice and beer we moved on to another place and sat down at a table only to be told that it was not open yet.

Perhaps this is an indication that we are not quite yet adjusted to living on spanish time yet!! So we decided to head back and stopped off at a "Venta" (restaurant/bar) about 27kms from Olvera.
Just out of interest, before leaving we looked in a few estate agents to find out how much property would be in the area and if you have between €200-350,000 that beachfront apartment could be yours. Keep doing the lottery.

The pictures show the yours truly, his lovely wife and the beachfront area. In one of them the backdrop is of Cadiz, which we will visit another day.
