Carnaval Chirigotas

This week is Carnival week here in Olvera, so tonight we went down to the Pavilion on the Recinto Ferial (Fairground) to watch performances by the Chirigotas (singing groups), a traditional part of the Carnaval.
Immediately upon arrival, we joined the queue for a free chocolate drink and cakes, another Carnaval tradition.

An appreciative audience were assembled to listen to the first group, "Los que salen el dia de la Virgen" (Those who come on the day of the Virgin).
All of the performers are local and beneath the make-up we did manage to recognise a few faces.

One of the delightful "ladies" showing perhaps a little more than she should !!.

The second Chirigota group "Buena, bonita y barata" (Good, pretty and cheap) made a grand entrance into the pavilion for the second performance of the night.

Chirigotas are well known for their comical and satirical wit, traditionally singing about local and national politics, local news and issues and everyday things that affect normal people.
Their music and lyrics are at the centre of the Carnaval celebrations.

The following videos will hopefully give you more of a flavour of the fun that was had.
