However, on this occasion we were pleased to be in the company of our friends Dan and Alison, this being their first trip to this lovely, historic city.
Setting off from Olvera at 8.30am we arrived at just gone ten, parking the car in the old part of the city.
After visiting the tourist office to replace my well worn map and obtain maps and guides to other area's of Andalucia, we sat down for coffee in the very pleasant Plaza San Juan de Dios, opposite the port area. Pictured above is the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) which today was also the focus of a protest requesting that work be given to the "Gaditanos", inhabitants of the city of Cadiz.
After coffee, we walked the short distance to the Plaza de la Catedral and onwards to the Plaza de las Flores, at one end of which is the impressive facade of the Correos (Post Office) building.
Just around the corner is the covered market, the oldest in Spain, selling fruit and veg plus an amazing array of fish.
After taking in the aromas and sights of the market, we headed for the Torre Tavira and its amazing Camera Obscura, an optical device which projects the outside light via a mirror, through a lens and then onto a white convex dish, giving fantastic moving images of Cadiz.
From the terrace at the top of the tower, you get a fabulous 360 degree panoramic view across the city.
Well worth a visit if you get the chance.
On top of the world, or the tower at least, with our friends Dan and Alison.
After the tower, we headed off to explore the narrow streets before stopping off at a restaurant for lunch.
